How Often Should you Visit a Dental Hygienist?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is the key to keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Brushing and flossing at home are important, but you also need to visit a dental hygienist for professional cleaning and check-ups.

How often you need to go depends on a few factors, including your oral health, how well you take care of your teeth at home, and whether you have any risk factors for oral problems.

Our recommendation is to visit a dental hygienist at least every six months.

By visiting a dental hygienist regularly, we can ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy and clean.

We’ll be able to spot any early warning signs of problems and help you avoid them.

Frequently visiting your dental hygienist should be part of a routine of daily oral care and regular dental appointments.

This is the most effective way to keep your smile healthy and avoid costly dental problems down the road.

An appointment with Jamie, our Dental Hygienist, includes screening for gum disease & mouth cancer, evaluation of the health of your gums, oral hygiene instructions and a thorough but gentle removal of any buildup on your teeth and gums, followed by a polish to remove stubborn stains.

Our clinic has a calm, relaxing atmosphere and we provide all of our treatment in a gentle manner.

Why is Good Oral Care so Important?

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it’s also been linked to heart disease, stroke, and other serious health problems.

By keeping your teeth and gums healthy, you can help avoid all of these problems.

Good oral hygiene starts at home with daily brushing and flossing.

But it’s also important to visit your dental hygienist regularly to have the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth cleaned professionally.

Without good oral care, plaque can build up on your teeth.

Plaque is a sticky mass of bacteria that forms on your teeth and gums. If it’s not removed, it can harden into tartar, which is more difficult to remove.

This bacteria can also lead to gum disease, which is an infection that can damage the gums, causing bleeding, swelling and even tooth loss.

What is Involved in a 'Scale and Polish?'

Scale and polish is the term used to refer to the removal of plaque and professional cleaning of the teeth.

Plaque and tartar can build over time, leaving you at an increased risk of gum disease.

Additionally, if it has been a while since your last appointment, you could experience stubborn stains or bad breath.

A scale and polish appointment will help to address each of these problems.

The first stage of the appointment will involve cleaning the deposits of plaque and tartar away from the teeth.

Your dental hygienist will typically use an ultrasonic scaler to make this process easier.

This tool uses vibrations to loosen the plaque and tartar, making it easier to remove.

After the plaque and tartar have been removed, your teeth will be polished to perfection using a rotating brush.

This will help to remove any remaining bacteria and unwanted stains.

At the end of the appointment, you’ll be left with a fresh, clean smile that you can feel proud of.

How Long Will my Appointment Take?

Routine cleaning and check-ups will usually take around 30 minutes.

During this time, the hygienist will clean your teeth, remove any staining and check for any early signs of gum disease or other problems before letting you enjoy the rest of your day.

If you need more intensive treatment, such as periodontal treatment or removal of advanced staining, this will take longer, sometimes up to 60 minutes.
